Cyrus the Great's Persian Empire overthrew Babylon in 539 BC and, in a striking reversal of prior imperial policy, issued a decree allowing exiled peoples — including the Jews — to return home and rebuild their temples. This decree, recorded in Ezra 1, set in motion the return from exile and the rebuilding of Jerusalem's temple under leaders like Zerubbabel, Ezra, and Nehemiah.
