The Neo-Babylonian Empire rose from the ashes of Assyria under Nabopolassar and reached its height under Nebuchadnezzar II. In 586 BC, Babylon conquered Jerusalem, destroyed Solomon's Temple, and carried the people of Judah into exile — the Babylonian Captivity that shapes so much of the Old Testament's prophetic and historical writing.
