After the conquest of Canaan under Joshua, the land was divided by lot among the twelve tribes of Israel. The tribe of Levi received no territorial inheritance, serving instead as priests supported by the other tribes, while Joseph's inheritance was split between his two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh — keeping the total at twelve allotments.
