By the time of Jesus's birth, Rome controlled the entire Mediterranean world, including Judea as a client kingdom and later a Roman province. Roman roads, the Pax Romana, and a common language of trade all shaped the world the Gospels and the book of Acts describe — the political backdrop against which the earliest church spread from Jerusalem to Rome itself.
