After Solomon's death, the united kingdom split in two: the northern Kingdom of Israel, made up of ten tribes with its capital eventually at Samaria, and the southern Kingdom of Judah, comprising Judah and Benjamin with its capital remaining at Jerusalem. The two kingdoms had separate kings, and often separate fortunes, until Israel fell to Assyria in 722 BC and Judah later fell to Babylon in 586 BC.
